This was so beautifully written and also I got really sad seeing the chat bot associating fat folks with ridicule - the fact that you asked why these particular costumes were chosen and all of its answers were along the lines of “because it will be hilarious.” Wish the bots could learn humor from you instead of the fatphobia baked into every layer of the internet.
I always wanted to do Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but have never got round to it as it is a costume that would require quite a bit of effort to make good tentacles! I think she is one of the few characters where being plus sized helps to achieve the vibe (rather than cosplaying as a straight sized character) and I always thought the voluptuous bosomy corset, seashell necklace and dramatic make up would be MAJOR.
My kids wanted to do Batman theme so I’m Catwoman- I could do 2x size which was the top one, but I like it enough especially since we also have black cats and I’ve been wearing my Cat Lady for Kamala bracelet for 2 months. We also have Joker and 2 Batmans.
I once did Devil in a blue dress and wore blue dress with devil horns and tail. Marilyn Monroe was another popular one, that white dress was very comfy and I wore it at least 3 Halloweens.
My husband has been Mario several times and we are waiting to see if our kids will want to bring the Mario/Peach back. My other favorite was the year we were all the Peanuts gang- husband was Charlie Brown, I was Lucy, kid was Snoopy, my sister was Peppermint Patty when we went to Boo at the Zoo. All of these except Snoopy were just regular clothes made into the costume, I bought a blue dress with a white collar that I liked to wear at other times.
I’ve dressed up as Boadicea and got LOTS of compliments. I am tall, broad-shouldered, and fat (yet with some serious muscle) so the Warrior Queen thing worked well. I think there was also some love for my bodacious ta-tas, but I could be mistaken.
I’d also suggest just dressing up as anything you fancy.
